How To Cook With Turmeric

Turmeric is a super root that has become incredibly popular recently, mainly because of its many health benefits. It is a great anti-inflammatory and, as a member of the ginger root family, it can help your digestive system recover, too.   

This root has long been used in both Indian and Caribbean cooking. They have even started to use it commercially in everything from smoothies to beauty products. Curcumin – the main ingredient in turmeric – has been found to help with depression, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach ulcers and Crohn’s disease.  

There is also research that is coming out that shows that it may even help prevent and slow the growth of cancer cells.  

A Strong And Slightly Bitter Spice

Turmeric is an orange spice that is often ground down and found in the spice section of many grocery stores. It has a bit of a bitter taste, making people wonder how they can cook with it.

Turmeric is often found in classic mustards, curry powder, chutneys and as a spice mixture in garam masala.

Some studies have shown that if you combine black pepper with turmeric in a dish and then add a fat source such as coconut oil or olive oil, your body will be much more able to absorb the curcumin.

Cooking With Turmeric

Cooking with turmeric is really a limitless adventure. Just remember that the flavor can be intense, so when you add it to your favorite dishes, start with just a little and increase it over time as you become more used to it. It will stain your clothes, so be careful when you use it, but feel free to experiment with it however you’d like.

Ideas For How To Add Turmeric Into Your Diet

For Ground Turmeric:

  • Try blending it into your smoothies: Use 1 teaspoon for a slight turmeric flavor. Once you get used to it, you can add up to 2 teaspoons for a more intense flavor. Whenever you do add it to your smoothies make sure to also add some coconut oil to boost the turmeric absorption.
  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric to any soup recipe. This will add a deep golden hue to the soup.
  • Since turmeric is a natural part of curries, it brings warm flavors any stew or curry. Whenever you sauté vegetables in oil, add 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric.
  • You can change the color of rice by adding ½ of a teaspoon of turmeric to the water when cooking.
  • Make your homemade or box mac and cheese more healthy by adding in ½ of a teaspoon of turmeric.
  • When brewing some regular tea, make sure you add in a ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric into your mug before pouring in the hot water. You can also enjoy a nice tisane by simply combining ground turmeric with hot water.
  • Make healthy turmeric golden pancakes: add in ½ teaspoon of ground turmeric to any dry pancake mix.
  • Make a delicious hummus topper: Combine 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds with a ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric with to sprinkle over hummus.
  • Cook up some lentils or other delicious legumes with olive oil, onions and 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric. Then you can either eat it as it is or combine the dish with some cooked quinoa and make some patties out of them.

For Fresh Turmeric:

  • To use the awesome fresh turmeric root, it is recommended that you peel it using the edge of a spoon and then grate it with a microplane grater. You can also cut off whole pieces of turmeric to cook with. Unused pieces of root can be wrapped in plastic and stored in the fridge for 7 to 10 days.
  • Add a 1-inch chunk of turmeric root to your homemade smoothies. Of you can use it in your freshly pressed juices.
  • Use your freshly grated root in homemade marinades for fish, chicken and beef, or flavorsome tofu or mushrooms with it. Just add 1 teaspoon of grated root to the marinade recipe for extra flavor and a color boost.
  • Stir some freshly grated turmeric into your salad dressings.
  • Intensify the color and flavor of some pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, or pumpkin muffins with turmeric. Simply stir in 1 teaspoon of shredded turmeric to the batter and cook as usual.
  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of some freshly grated turmeric to your stir-fry. It is best to add the turmeric in while you’re sautéing the vegetables.
  • Sprinkle into an egg dish or add it into a frittata or a quiche recipe. The color of the eggs will also be enhanced with the turmeric.
  • Make a delicious bowl of yogurt: On top of some plain Greek yogurt, add 1 tablespoon of grated fresh turmeric, ¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper, a teaspoon of olive oil and a pinch of sea salt.

To supercharge your turmeric add a dash of black pepper it’s reported to increase absorption!
